Are you aware of the USDA Dietary Guidelines? Do you know what they consist of? For starters the guidelines say you should consume less than 10% of calories per day from ADDED sugar, consume less than 10% of calories per day from saturated fats, consume less than 2,300 milligrams per day of sodium and keep alcohol to moderate levels. For women, that is no more than one drink per day, and for men, it is no more than two. Naturally there are exceptions and you should check with your doctor.
Bottom line to a healthy eating pattern is that nutrition should be made up from “food” that is fresh, canned, dried or frozen. You should eat foods that are nutrient dense and contain essential minerals and vitamins. Be mindful of enough fiber and consume plenty of veggies, fruits, whole grains, lean protein, legumes and a small amount of healthy oils. As always, stay clear of added sugars, saturated fats, refined starches and sodium. Be sure to read the labels so you make the best decisions. Add activity and share your Healthy Habits with friends, family and co-workers- you make a difference.
